Activists came to U.S. headquarters, speaking out against pollution issues
A large protest at Formosa Plastics’ American headquarters in Livingston led to the arrests of six people Friday morning. Formosa Plastics has raised the ire of protesters hoping to bring more attention to the company’s history of pollution in Texas, Louisiana and Vietnam.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipin our Spotlight on Business Report tonight protesters from around the country descended on New Jersey today decrying the practices of a Taiwan based Plastics Company that's headquartered here in Livingston the company Formosa Plastics is accused of dumping plastic pellets into waterways in Taiwan and in Texas and Louisiana where it also operates and as Ted Goldberg reports today's protest ended in arrest Diane Wilson has nothing but compliments for the Livingston Township Police the guys were really nice the women there were really nice to me it's one of the nicer jails I've been into she's been protesting Formosa plastics for 35 years with encampments hunger strikes and a successful lawsuit formosa's uh usually been very reluctant to arrest me you sound disappointed a bit a bit Wilson was ready one arm had a phone number for jail help the other had her lawyer she got her wish this morning as she was one of six protesters arrested at formosa's American headquarters in Livingston we see you we love you we love you we with you we with you about 50 protesters showed up this morning with one goal in mind shut them down shut them down the protest was somewhat successful while they didn't shut down Formosa workers were told to work from home today that is the only way to get attention with fosa you have to get right in their face and you you got to make it so they don't forget who you are Formosa Plastics is not a household name nobody knows who they are um so by bringing attention to um the uh Injustice that they have done in Vietnam with their steel factory out there um 7,000 people um still yet to see just compensation people have been arrested so far this morning are you concerned or worried that you might be next no I'm standing on the right side no concern many of these protesters came from Texas and Louisiana where Formosa has been accused of badly polluting the environment they make it so we cannot fish so you cannot eat the fish plastic we do not need any more plastic made in this world everybody welcomed the first industry they thought it was so wonderful and it brought jobs but the industry didn't tell the other side after the protest they rallied at a church in Newark we have not come here alone their motto is no faith in Plastics and their criticism at times sounded biblical for most is Satan and Satan will fall if we fight and we think together God who created in six days and he looked back and he said everything was good and I thought to myself why would man want want to mess up what wasn't broken Formosa Plastics did not respond to our request for comment they also have a history of major pollution in Vietnam where activists and journalists have been arrested for speaking about it I have no word to describe I just hope that we all keep fighting for these people to to be free to get out of prison go back to their normal life life isn't fair but life is not going to give you anything and you have to go after it somebody say amen and I believe that sometime protesting is necessary these protesters also called for companies to divest from Formosa Plastics with more possible protests to come in Essex County I'm Ted Goldberg NJ Spotlight news
